Groundwater Flow and Salinity Intrusion Simulation in Malekan Plain Aquifer
Authors
Abstract:
Due to groundwater overextraction, during the recent years, Malekan plain aquifer has been faced to a risk of increasing salination. The groundwater flow model of the plain was designed, invesitagion of groundwater flow regime and precise hydraulic parameters estimation, utilizing the various method such as geological surveys, tomography methods, hydrochemical analysis and simulation of aquifer conceptual model in the GMS interface software package (GMS 10.1.4). The mass transport model was designed, then, to simulate the passways of salinity and dissolved solid concentration (Cl-) in the aquifer, using MT3DMS numerical code. The results show that the flow and transport model has explained the real behavior of the system with a good approximation and there is a good adaptation between the observed and simulated data. The over exploration of groundwater resources, which caused the water table decreasing, also resulted the extending of the saltwater intrusion in the northwestern part of the plain and thereby the deteriorating of groundwater quality and quantity in northwestern part.

Simulation of Nitrate Concentration in Aquifer in Qazvin Plain Using Groundwater Modeling System
Background Nitrate is among major anions in drinking water. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate its concentration in water resources. Modeling is a management strategy to predict the behavior of nitrate in water resources. Objective The current study aimed to predict nitrate concentration in the aquifer of Qazvin plain, using Groundwater Modeling System (GMS). Methods The GMS7.1 software ...
full textEvaluation and Simulation of Groundwater Flow in Aquifers Enclosed With Desert Saline Areas (Case Study: Isfahan Province-Ardestan Aquifer)
Quantitative changes in groundwater and crises resulting from uncontrolled water extraction have turned water resources management into one of the supply-demand dilemmas in arid regions. The present study evaluated the quantitative situation of water resources in the Ardestan Plain adjoining the Ardestan desert by using the MODFLOW mathematical model. Simulation of groundwater flow in the stead...
full textSaltwater intrusion vulnerability assessment using AHP-GALDIT model in Kashan plain aquifer as critical aquifer in a semi-arid region
Owing to population growth and water demand, coastal aquifers all over the world are over–pumped, resulting in serious problems such as saltwater intrusion. So, in these conditions, assessing the groundwater system’s vulnerability and finding areas with saltwater intrusion potential are vital for the better management of aquifers. In this study, AHP-GALDIT was applied to saltwater intrusion vul...
full textHydrogeological investigations and numerical simulation of groundwater flow in the karstic aquifer of northwestern Yucatan, Mexico
A freshwater lens underlain by saltwater exists beneath the entire northern Yucatan karst plain, Mexico. Water levels recorded in this plain, during the period June 1987 April, 1989, were used to map the water table, identify inland hydrogeologic boundaries, and estimate the thickness of the freshwater lens using the Ghyben-Herzberg relation. The water table under most of northwestern Yucatan i...
full textApplication of MODFLOW and geographic information system to groundwater flow simulation in North China Plain, China
MODFLOW is a groundwater modeling program. It can be compiled and remedied according to the practical applications. Because of its structure and fixed data format, MODFLOW can be integrated with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology for water resource management. The North China Plain (NCP), which is the politic, economic and cultural center of China, is facing with water resources sh...
full textSalinity, Chemistry and Quality of Groundwater in Robat – Khorramabad Plain, West of Iran
Salinization of groundwater in semiarid regions, as a limiting factor of use, has a strategic importance. In this study, the sources of salinity, chemistry and Quality of groundwater in Robat – Khorramabad plain have been identified using geochemical methods. Using data analysis, the concentration of cations and anions are recognized as Ca2+>Na+ >Mg2+>K+ and HCO3-> Cl-> SO42+> NO3-> F-. High co...
